Cultural Navigation

The Bhutanese Nepali community has become increasingly prominent over the last two decades in the Greater Harrisburg area. As a result, Asian Refugees United staff are certified as cultural navigators and translators by Capital Area Intermediate Unit 15 (CAIU 15), working across different school districts, with legal workers in courthouses, and with local organizations. They provide resources and support to help inform staff and further bridge gaps in understanding the community, its culture, and its history. This work also helps create stronger connections between Bhutanese Nepali families and the institutions they interact with, ensuring that language and cultural differences do not become barriers to accessing important services and resources. Through these efforts, cultural navigators play an important role in building trust, increasing cultural understanding, and supporting the growing needs of the community.
